The toll from devastating storms of Ingrid and Manuel has reached 80 with many stranded and more than 50 missing in a massive landslide north of Acapulco.
The Mexican IARU member society, Federacion Mexicana De Radio Experimentadores (FMRE) is using both 7060 and 14120 kHz to carry emergency traffic.
Zian Taboada XE1ATZ reports that tropical storm Manuel hit the State of Guerrero which is cut off from the outside world with the loss of communications, now being provided by amateur radio.
Stations in several locations are helping the communications in the affected areas and receiving messages from the Gulf of Mexico.
“This weather situation of two storms of this strength has not occurred in the Mexican republic since 1958,” Zian XE1ATZ said.
The weather was expected to improve on the Pacific side, though the rainstorm Manuel seems to intensifying and likely to affect the region of the Baja California Peninsula and the Gulf of California.
Officials in Mexico put at 35,000 the number of homes damaged or destroyed. Electricity, water and communications have been cut, flights cancelled and widespread food shortages.
The hurricane season had trained and prepared radio amateurs in a number of countries on alert.
